Jack Canine resides in Indiana in the warm months and Florida in the winter months. He is CEO of Banjo Corporation (no, they don't make banjos). They manufacture pumps, valves, filters and most of the items needed in handling liquids. He started playing the banjo years ago, but, according to Jack, before he became a proficient player, the banjo was put back in its case allowing him to pursue a twenty-four hour business career resulting in today's Banjo Corporation. Over the years he managed to keep his love of banjos active by attending Banjo Conventions where he developed an interest in collecting vintage banjos. His pursuit of this beloved instrument led him all over the United States and as far away as Germany and New Zealand. In early 1997, Jack lost his wife of forty plus years and decided it was time to share his collection with others. After traveling and conducting serious research on museums, he decided that the best approach was to start with a clean sheet of paper. Guthrie, Oklahoma was selected, because of its historical significance, centralized location in the country and site of a major banjo festival each Memorial Day weekend. Thus, Jack Canine and Brady Hunt founded the National Four-String Banjo Museum in late 1997. In recent years, arthritis has taken its toll on Jack's banjo playing. But in Jack's own words, "I still manage. I am limited to about twenty minutes; however, with one pill I can go up to two hours, and with two pills, I have made it up to three hours." When in Indiana he plays weekly with a Dixieland band, plus the Murat Shrine Band and the Hoosier Banjo Band. When cold weather and Florida beckons, Jack plays weekly with the Gold Coast Banjo Society in Venice, Florida, and the Bonita Village Band in Bonita Springs, Florida. |
